Off With Their Heads – All Images Courtesy of Ariel Rubin

The Queen of Hearts echoed a sentiment that a lot of Brooklynites are feeling this winter. As blue-chips leap off the cliff of hope, dragging the Nikkei and everything else in the financial world down with them, it’s hard not to want to find an identifiable source of our impending doom. How did we get here? Who is responsible? Get your index finger ready to point at the face of blame. The guillotine might seem a little too harsh, so RecessionGirl is happy to introduce, Ariel Rubin to cushion the blow with imagery that is more whimsical, spirited and silly in this collection of photos titled ‘Box of Fools’.

Ariel Rubin is a multi-disciplinary artist working mediums including photography, multi-media, music and writing. Her photographs and writing have been included in publications including the Magenta Foundation’s book, Flash Forward 2006, Inscribed Magazine and The Globe and Mail. In 2006 Ariel co-founded the independent arts publication, it’ll happen, which she continues to co-edit, write and create.

In a New York Minute – All Images Courtesy of Daniel Norman

Somethings change during recessions. Somethings stay the same. New York will always be New York. In some ways it changes. In other ways it stays the same. In his tribute to the Big Apple, Daniel Norman captures a bit of a recession New York state of mind.

‘The In-Between’ All Images Courtesy of Ariel Rubin

Recessions inspire transition.  A moment to consider how life could be lived differently if the tables turned.  A minute to ponder reinvention of the self.  The promise of hope is there, but just a little out of reach.  You might find yourself lingering in the space in-between.  In this series titled ‘The In-Between’ Ariel Rubin presents fine art photography dedicated to the reflective process and what it means to grow in this day and age.

Chalk is Cheap

Chalk-to-the-hand cause the street is listening.

RecessionGirl is proud to present friend and street artist Ellis G. You’ve seen his stuff on the streets of Crooklyn and maybe you know about his old-school graffiti days. RecessionGirl loves the low cost tag of his work and hopes he inspires you to ‘Chalk About It’ on your stoops and sidewalks all over the hood.
